Top of PageThe police department issues permits only to those residents who have satisfied the following established criteria and provide for the yearly renewals of issued permits:
- Legal resident
- At least 21 years of age
- Good cause
- Good moral character. Applicant must pass a California Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigations background check.
Top of PageIf you live within a jurisdiction of a city police department, you may apply to the city police department or county sheriff's office for a CCW license. However, only residents of a city may apply to a city's police department for a CCW license. The agency can answer your questions and provide you with copies of their CCW policy statement and the State's Standardized CCW Application. In the city of Sacramento, you may begin the application process by visiting the public counter at Police Headquarters:
